The Wempen Family endowed scholarship was created by Dick and Rita Wempen in appreciation for outstanding educational opportunities for North Iowa students which included their three children, Michael, David and Sara. All three graduated from MIACC with praise for staff, academic programs and extracurricular activities. All three participated in NIACC Singers and student government.
Dick was a counselor at NIACC for 32 years. Previously he taught science in Jewell, Nashua and Clear Lake Iowa where he also became a counselor.
Rita taught vocal music in Nashua, Ventura, Klemme and Clear Lake Iowa. She spent her last ten teaching years in Clear Lake.
The three Wempen children participated in music, athletics and student government while attending Clear Lake High School. All three graduated from NIACC.
Michael is currently a Federal Agent in law enforcement. David is a middle school principal and Sara teaches middle school reading and language arts. All credit NIACC with the giving them a great beginning.
The Wempen Family scholarship will be specifically offered to a Clear Lake High School graduate in the top half of their class, active in extra curricular activities and demonstrating good citizenship. Preference will be given to students who plan to major in education or law enforcement.
“Education is a top priority in our family,” stated Dick and Rita. “NIACC has served us well and we hope to help make college available for students who strive to serve and make a difference in the world.”
