Ward D. Harrison was hopeful that by starting a scholarship fund, students might have the good fortune that was afforded to him decades ago.

Ward’s younger sister, Helen Bluhm, remembers that it was a combination of an inspiring high school teach and being the recipient of a scholarship that motivated Ward to further his education.  Harrison received the first American Legion Scholarship to attend Mason City Junior College (NIACC’s predecessor) in 1927.  Bluhm says in the days of the Depression that kind of scholarship assistance “was God sent.”

“Ward was very proud of being able to go to college mostly on scholarship.” Bluhm said.  “He has a big spot in his heart for scholarships.”

Harrison’s high school chemistry and physic teacher, Mr. H. H. Boyce, encouraged him to go to college.  Boyce knew Harrison would need financial assistance, as many families in that time did and created a scholarship with requirements that only Harrison could meet.  Even with the scholarship, Harrison took a year off between his freshman and sophomore years to work and save money.  While at MCJC, Harrison joined the football team and became the quarterback.  He graduated from MCJC in 1930.

“He loved MCJC,” Helen Bluhm said.  “It opened up many doors for him.”

“His scholarship meant a lot to him,” Martha Harrison, Ward’s wife, said.  “He might not have gone on to school without this great start to his education.”

Harrison enjoyed learning and bettering himself through a college education.  He went on to graduate from Iowa State University with a chemical engineering degree and earned a Ph.D. from the Institute of Paper Chemistry in 1936.

After graduating from school, Harrison put his degrees to use in the paper industry.  He worked for several paper companies before buying Howard Paper Mills in 1972 where he served as President and Chairman of the Board of his family-owned business.

Harrison passed away in August 1986 however, his passion for scholarships lives on through the Ward D. Harrison Memorial Scholarship.

Esther Stickland discovered a love for vocal music while in high school.  Through the encouragement of a high school instructor and later a college professor, she studied music at Washburn College in Topeka, Kansas.

The Esther L. Stickland Scholarship Fund was established in 1987 by Esther.  Each year, scholarships will be awared to full-time NIACC students majoring in music.  The scholarhsip represents Esther's lifelong interest in music.  "If a young person has a special talent, it should be developed," Esther said.  "I want young adults to have an education; education is essential."

Esther is the daughter of a German immigrant, August Lauterbach, who came to the United States as a young adult looking for an opportunity.  Lauterbach wanted his family to have every opportunity and to be exposed to new thinking.  He encouraged education, music and travel.  Esther said, "my parents felt we should travel, around the world is possible.  Now, I have been all ofver the world, but my favorite place is home."

The fourth of five children, Esther was raised in western Kansas.  There was a piano in the house and a strong emphasis on cultural advantages.  "My mother felt we should always have an instrument in the house, and my father loved music too," Esther said.  "I guess that contributed to my love of music."
Esther and her husband, Charles, moved to North Iowa in the 1930's.  They raised three daughters, who also grew up with a piano in the house and later completed their own college educations.  Esther advised her daughters and all students, "Pursue your interests-whatever they are.  Having a special interest is essential in life."

In addition to her family responsibilites, Esther has been active in community affairs.  She was an original organizer of the Altar Guild at St. John's Episcopal Church, and she directed the Guild for many years.  Esther was active in the YMCA, the Republican Party, and PEO.

At her 100th birthday celebration on May 20, 1997, Esther said, "I have had a good life."  She passed away on January 13, 2001 at the age of 103.

Beverly Hermanson

A strong belief in the value of education and an appreciation for the resources NIACC has to offer led Everett and Beverly Hermanson to establish the Hermanson Scholarship.  The couple had financially supported NIACC starting in 1977 and in 1998 they chose to establish an endowed scholarship in memory of their daughter, Ann.

Everett was a Mason City native, attended Mason City Junior College (NIACC’s predecessor) for one more year prior to receiving a BS degree from Iowa State University.  Beverly grew up in Minnesota and she and Everett met at Iowa State where she, too, graduated with a BS degree.

After marriage, the Hermansons settled in Mason City so Everett could join his father and uncle at the family business, Hermanson Brothers Dairy Products.  This business grew from a one-wagon service in 1909 to a dairy with a fleet of trucks serving communities as far as Algona and Charles City prior to its sale in 1954.

Beverly invested much of her time to raising three children, Paul, Ann and Mark.  She instilled the value of education in them and all three became health professionals.  Ann graduated with a nursing degree from St. Olaf College, and Paul and Mark became an orthodontist and a physician, respectively, after graduating from the University of Iowa.

Although Everett and Beverly completed their formal education long ago, they remained life-long learners and took classes and attended events and NIACC.  “NIACC has one of the most beautiful campuses we’ve ever seen.  We always drive our visitors through campus,” they said.

Everett died in 2009 at the age of 93.  The Hermansons wanted to help future generations of students recognize the value of education and they have made it possible through their establishment of the Hermanson Scholarship.

NIACC colleague Roger Watson said, “George was always bright and upbeat and had a strong healthy laugh.  I’ll remember him for his enthusiasm and zest for life and his love for education will continue with the endowed scholarship for future educators.”

Cheryl Paine

Evelyn Ruby, originally of Glenwood, Iowa, was the youngest of seven children.  Coming from a lineage of teachers, Evelyn knew the importance of education; however, her passion was nursing.  Her siblings helped pay her way through Nursing school at State University of Iowa (now University of Iowa).  She graduated as an RN in 1936.  After graduation, she married her college sweetheart, Warren Ruby.  They moved to Mason City and embraced the community – where both would spend the rest of their lives.

While most women of the era stayed at home, Evelyn made a career for herself.  She worked in the Emergency Room of St Joseph Mercy Hospital (now Mercy Medical Center); she did private duty nursing for local families; and eventually worked her way up to Director of Public Health Nursing for the City of Mason City.  Evelyn loved nursing and wanted everyone to enjoy their career as much as she loved hers.

Through the Evelyn Ruby Nursing Scholarship, her daughter, Cheryl Paine, and granddaughter, Heather Paine, continue her legacy – a life-long love of learning and caring for others.  The Evelyn Ruby Nursing Scholarship is available to full-time NIACC students working toward an ADN, with the intention of pursuing a BSN degree.  Preference will be given to students planning to complete their BSN degree at the University of Iowa.

Connie Scherber

Connie Scherber created this scholarship to honor the memory of her late husband, Patrick, who passed away in April of 2006 following a brave fight with cancer. Patrick knew very well the importance of a higher education having graduated from Bemidji State College with a degree in education.  He worked throughout southern Minnesota as an educator and consultant while continuing to further his own education. In 1978, Patrick moved to Iowa and worked as a special education consultant for Northern Trails AEA 2 and later AEA 267 until his retirement in 2005.

Dale & Violet Reichardt

Because of NIACC’s importance in their son’s life, Dale and Violet Reichardt established the Terry D. Reichardt Memorial Engineering Scholarship through the NIACC Foundation after Terry died in 1979.

Terry D. Reichardt was in his sophomore year at NIACC when he was killed in an automobile accident.  He was planning to transfer to Iowa State University after graduating from NIACC in the spring.  He intended to enroll in the engineering program at ISU. Which is why his family designated the scholarship for engineering of pre-engineering students.  Terry’s ultimate goal was to take over his father’s Garner construction company.

Terry’s parents thought it was important that he attend a small college after graduating from Garner High School, as oppose to going to a big university right away.  Violet said Terry really enjoyed his time and NIACC and felt he got one-on-one attention from the instructors at the school.

“NIACC worked very well with Terry, and he felt very much a part of the school system there,” Violet said.  “It was just a neat part of his life.”

Beside construction and engineering, Terry’s interests included sports and hunting.  His mother said he had a great personality and “like all aspects of living.”

Violet said that family enjoys hearing from recipients of the scholarship.  “It makes us feel really good,” Violet said.  She and Dale have saved every letter they’ve received and also send copies to Terry’s sisters, Reane Haaland of Armstrong, Iowa and Pamela MacDonald of Apple Valley, Minnesota.

Although Terry’s life was taken from him before he could reach his goals, the Reichardt family is helping other students reach theirs through the Terry D. Reichardt Memorial Engineering Scholarship.

Del and Mary Laudner, longtime friends of NIACC established this endowed scholarship fund to assist an agriculture student in furthering their education.

"We want to encourage and assist young, potential farmers or those interested in some other aspect of the farming business to get the education needed to help them succeed.  We believe NIACC is the best place to achieve these goals," Del and Mary said.  "We hope it will be useful in furthering the College's Ag programs by assisting promising students to reach their goals.

Both Del and Mary spent their early years on farms in Floyd County.  Once married, they moved to California where both graduated San Diego State and had careers in civil engineering and education.  Although they have lived in San Diego for many years, Del and Mary retained their deep connection to Iowa and their interest in all things agricultural.  Their commitment to the area is evident in the donation of 70 acres of farmland in the Rockford area to the Fossil and Prairie Center Foundation and eight donated acres of land in Rockford to the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock School District for use by the FFA students.

Don and Barb Roeder

In 2005, the Arlene Baia Memorial Scholarship was created by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Don Roeder to honor her mother’s dedication to NIACC and her love for educating nursing students. This annual scholarship is awarded to a second year NIACC Associate Degree Nursing student.

Arlene Baia was a nursing instructor at NIACC from 1968 until 1979.  She then became chair of the Health Services Division until her retirement in 1988.  “During my 38-year career in nursing education, I appreciated being able to work with hundreds of future nurses from Iowa and Minnesota,” she said.

Arlene, a native of Duluth, Minnesota, received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota in nursing education and a master’s degree in higher education with a minor in sociology from Iowa State University.  Arlene valued education and encouraged her students, co-workers, and two daughters, Bonnie and Barbara, to seek higher education.

Bonnie graduated from NIACC in 1970 with an associate degree, and she planned to pursue a career in psychology and counseling prior to her sudden death.  Barbara graduated from Rochester Junior College with an associate degree, Mankato State University with a bachelor’s degree in social science, and Winona State University with a master’s degree in business administration.  Barbara Roeder is currently employed as a grants/projects manager for the College Advancement Division at Hawkeye Community College.

The Bonnie Baia Scholarship was originally created by Arlene Baia in memory of her daughter, Bonnie, a NIACC graduate, who passed away shortly after her graduation.  When Arlene passed away in 2005, her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Don Roeder, established a scholarship fund in Arlene’s name and renamed the initial Baia scholarship fund in memory of her sister.

Bonnie graduated from NIACC in 1970 with an associate degree, and she planned to pursue a career in psychology and counseling prior to her sudden death.  Arlene said, “Bonnie knew she wanted to be a counselor when she was in eighth grade.  She was always interested in helping people.  Even in high school her friends came to her for advice about their problems.”  Bonnie had planned to continue her education at Mankato State University.

When establishing the original scholarship fund, Arlene said, “Through the Baia Scholarship, I want to assist future NIACC nursing or social science students with their college education while honoring the memory of my daughter, Bonnie.”

Dr. Dixon has recognized the value of education for many years.  A Kansas City, Missouri, native, Dr. Dixon earned a B.S. from the University of Kansas and an M.D. from Kansas University Medical School.

Dr. Dixon served as a medical officer in the United State Air Force for three years prior to his ophthalmology training at Washington University in St. Louis.  He became a board certified ophthalmologist in 1955 and practiced in Parsons, Kansas for 10 years.

Dr. and Mrs. Dixon had the opportunity to move to Mason City in 1957 when he joined another ophthalmologist in his practice.  Dr. Dixon purchased the practice and served North Iowans as an ophthalmologist for 40 years until his retirement in 1997.

Jane, as Mary Jane is known, also valued education.  She earned a B.S. in business administration from the University of Missouri and a M.S. in social work in several nursing home in Mason City, including the Heritage Care Center and USA Healthcare, formerly Sunrise Care Center.

Dr. Dixon and his late wife always wanted to give back to the community that gave so much to them over the years.  “NIACC plays an extremely important role in the fabric, life and economics of North Iowa.  It is important for those of us who have benefited from the opportunities offered here to give back to our community.  I feel a gift to NIACC is the best way to ensure that future generations will have access to the many opportunities provided to me and my family,” Dixon says.  “I am not a millionaire of anything, but I thought if I did this, perhaps it would encourage others to do the same.  I’m 92 and am not going to live forever.  I would rather do something now that helps students today.”

Many NIACC students have and will continue to receive scholarships thanks to the Dixons.

Dr. Richard Pitman

Roger and Marie Pitman graduates of Mason City High School married in 1933 and went on to live their entire lives in Mason City.  They had two children; lived on a very limited income and yet were able to send their daughter to nursing school and their son to medical school.   While they did not have the opportunity of a higher education for themselves, Roger and Marie instead made it possible for their children.

Both Roger and Marie developed Multiple Sclerosis in mid-life.  Roger worked as parts manager and then service manager for the Pontiac-Cadillac agency in Mason until his health forced his to retire.  He was in a wheelchair for the last few years of his life, however, kept busy at home with leather work and checking by telephone on the safety of other homebound people he knew.  Roger died in 1970 as a result of lung complications of Multiple Sclerosis.

Marie spent the last 15 years of her life a Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.  She was in constant pain all those years, but yet managed to be an encouragement to others.  Marie died in 1985 from complications of her Multiple Sclerosis.

According to Joan Birch, the Pitman’s daughter, “Our parents would be pleased to know that others are being helped by this scholarship.  These were two people whom life dealt with rather harshly and yet they chose not to be bitter and gave all they could.”

Dr. Terry and Elaine Maxon

Charles and Mary Jane Maxon believed in the value of an education and they wanted to help North Iowa students get a better start through higher education.

Charles was an instructor in NIACC’s business division from 1965 through 1978.  Prior to joining the NIACC faculty, he was controller at the University of Nebraska.  According to daughter-in-law Elaine Maxon, “Charles really loved NIACC.  He especially enjoyed working with students.”

Mary Jane was an educator, as well, teaching at Hamilton Business College.  She was also a talented watercolor painter, commercial artist and CPA.

In addition to teaching, Charles and Mary Jane owned Maxon’s Arabians, an Arabian horse breeding business in rural Mason City.  They bred and raised Arabian horses, and one of Maxon’s Arabians was a three-class champion in 1977.

The Maxon’s had two sons, Terry and Stephen.  Both sons attended NIACC prior to seeking further degrees.  Today Terry is a doctor in Glendale, Arizona and Stephen is an artist/sculptor in Kalona, Iowa.

When Charles died in 1979, Mary Jane established a NIACC scholarship in his memory.  The scholarship is designed for a full-time student with special consideration for students in agriculture-related programs.  Mary Jane died in 1998 and her friends and family added to the scholarship fund in her honor.  In 1999, the fund was renamed the Charles W. and Mary Jane Maxon Memorial Scholarship.

Eileen Mediger

The Dale and Louise Swanson Scholarship was created to help area youth continue their education.  As a lifelong educator, Louise understands the value of an education. “I believe that NIACC is an excellent organization providing education and cultural opportunities to the citizens of North Iowa,” she said.

A native of Northwood, Dale served in the United States Navy.  Following his service he attended Luther College and graduated from Iowa State University.  He taught veterans on the Farm Training programs.  Dale passed away in 2000.

Louise (Miles) Swanson also attended Luther College and went on to graduate from Iowa State Teachers College (now known as the University of Northern Iowa) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education.  She furthered her education by obtaining a Master of Science Degree in Education from Iowa State University.  She dedicated 30 years of service to the Mason City Public School system.

Both of Dale’s and Louise’s daughters, Janet and Eileen, are NIACC graduates.  The late Janet Dean graduated from NIACC in 1997 and Eileen Mediger acquired her degree in 1979.

“It is my hope that this annual scholarship award will make a difference in the life of a deserving student,” said Louise.

George and Eunice Tice

A desire to honor her husband and to assist students who want to pursue an education in a health-related field led Eunice Tice to create the George I. and Eunice A. Tice Scholarship.

Both George and Eunice attended Mason City Junior College (NIACC’s predecessor).  After one year at MCJC, Eunice transferred to Iowa State University, where she earned a BS in nutrition.  George graduated from MCJC in 1936 and entered medical school at the University of Iowa.  The couple married in 1941 just before George joined the U.S. Navy.  After World War II, the couple lived in Rochester, Minnesota, where Dr. Tice finished his surgical residency.

In 1947, the Tices returned to North Iowa where George joined the medical practice of his father, Dr. Claude Tice.  George practiced medicine in Mason City for over 40 years.  When he died in 1989, Eunice used the memorial gifts given in his honor to establish a scholarship fund.

The couple raised four children.  Their son, Dale, is employed at Home Interiors in Dallas, Texas.  Ann, Alan, and Paul have followed in their father’s and grandfather’s footsteps and are physicians.  “Medicine runs in the family,” Alan said.

George and Eunice resided in Mason City but thoroughly enjoyed summers at their cottage on Clear Lake.  They moved to Clear Lake permanently in 1977.  The Tices enjoyed vacationing in an apartment in Switzerland from 1974 until George’s death.

Eunice was active in Mason City organizations, including First United Methodist Church, Mason City Women’s Club, PEO, Mason City Medical Auxiliary, and the MacNider Art Museum.  Inspired by the deafness of her son, Dale, she was also very involved in organizations that helped the handicapped.

Alan said his mother chose to set up a scholarship fund at NIACC because his parents  “had a strong belief in the Mason City community.  They were strong proponents of local education.”

Glen and Penny Krogh

Glen and Penny Krogh established a NIACC scholarship in 1997 to help support area students.  “It is a privilege to help NIACC.  We want to see both the school and its students succeed,” Penny said.

The Kroghs lived in Mason City since 1952.  “We want to pay back the community for many happy years,” Penny said, “and we chose to do this through a scholarship.”

Glen was a dentist in the Brick and Tile Building in Mason City from 1952 to 1985.  Penny taught school in Iowa City and Mason City, then joined Glen’s dental practice in 1973 as his secretary.

“Glen had many skilled, cute, young secretaries in his practice, but the young men kept meeting and marrying them and they would move away,” Penny laughed.  “So he hired me to solve this problem!”

The Krogh’s were very involved with both church and community activities in Mason City.  Glen was affiliated with dental organizations on a local, state, and national level; as well as the Masonic Lodge, Kiwanis, Elks Club and First United Methodist Church.  Penny was active in several organizations, including PEO Chapter LB, Alpha Delta Kappa and other educational and dental societies and the First United Methodist Church.

Glen and Penny always supported NIACC by attending College activities and will continue to support NIACC through this established Glen and Penny Krogh Scholarship.

Gold-Eagle Cooperative

On September 1, 1983, Gold-Eagle Cooperative first staked its claim on superior service to farmers in north central Iowa. After merging Farmers Elevator Company of Goldfield and Farmers Cooperative Company of Eagle Grove, we immediately began defining our company and designing our future.

In 1991, Renwick Farmers Cooperative members joined our organization, followed by Livermore Farmers Cooperative Elevator Company farmers in 1992 and shareholders in Corwith Community Cooperative in 1996. In those first 15 years, Gold-Eagle knew the answer to improved service was improved facilities. As our customers found ways to grow more corn and soybeans, we increased storage by 3 million bushels.

2002 will go into the records books as our largest growth year. In March 2002 we consolidated the membership and facilities of The Farmers Cooperative Society of Wesley and Titonka and in August of 2002 we were successful in adding the Hardy Cooperative Elevator of Hardy and Thor into our organization. Total storage at the end of 2002 was nearly 23 million bushels and ten years later as we approached the end of 2012, total storage is nearly 32 million bushels.
But storing grain isn't our ultimate goal. In July of 2004 we started an equity drive to build an Ethanol Plant in Goldfield. After successfully raising the necessary equity, CORN, LP broke ground in October of that same year with production of Ethanol beginning in December of 2005. The Plant consumes roughly 60,000 bushels (400 acres) of corn per day and employs 40 full-time employees. Thanks to the corn requirements of CORN, LP and our feed operations we are consuming all of the corn our members produce. In today's agricultural world, adding value to our member’s grain does indeed create a golden relationship.

Jane Kahn

“We all need further education and local colleges are probably the best place to start,” said Robert Isensee in a 1995 interview with the NIACC Foundation.  Robert and Mary Isensee made further education a reality for North Iowans through many NIACC contributions and the creation of an endowed scholarship fund through a generous donation of stock in 1980.

In an interview prior to his death, Isensee indicated that both he and Mary were very interested in education and that they felt that NIACC could benefit from their scholarship support.

Bob was raised in Fargo, North Dakota.  He received a law degree from the University of Iowa and joined the banking industry upon graduation.  He came to Mason City in 1949 as vice president of United Home Bank and Trust Company, which became Boatmen’s Bank, now Bank of America.  Bob became president of the bank in 1957 and remained there until his retirement in 1977.  He also bought, developed and sold 17 banks across North Iowa.  Isensee spent a successful career in a field he loved.

Both Bob and Mary were active in Mason City.  Bob was president of the Mason City Development Association, on the board of the Iowa Partners for Alliance and a member of the Iowa State Bankers Association and a member of the Iowa Bar Association.  Mary was very involved with the First Congregational Church and was active in local community fund-raising activities and politics.  She was also president of the YWCA in Mason City.

Although neither Bob nor Mary are living today, their legacy of community involvement lives on through their generous gifts.  Each community where Bob and Mary resided has been touched by their generosity and their belief in giving back to the community.  Their contributions to NIACC illustrate their beliefs in the importance of education.

Janet Petefish established the Norma Jaeger Scholarship in her mother's memory in 2015.  Norma Jaeger became an LPN through studies when she was 40 years old.  Janet felt this a great way to honor her mother by the two $1000 scholarships to non-traditional nursing students.
Jay Fangman

The Fangman Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1981 by the North Iowa Area Community College Foundation at the request of family and friends of JoAnn Fangman and her daughter Kathy. JoAnn and Kathy were killed in a motor vehicle accident in January of 1981. The scholarship is designated to a fine arts student living in NIACC’s service area with an academic record showing the potential to succeed.

JoAnn was employed from 1967 through 1975 as the Director of the Student Union located on NIACC’s campus.

In 1976, JoAnn realized her dream teaching career and opened her own cooking school, La Petite Ecole (The Little School) de French Cuisine.  JoAnn would spend the next five years teaching over 1,000 students the fine art of French Cuisine with daughter Kathy joining her as her right-hand assistant in 1979.

By 1980, JoAnn had begun to assemble notes for her first cookbook and following the return from her upcoming fourth trip to France was planning to settle down and start writing her cookbook. Unfortunately, due to her untimely death the cookbook would not be written, however; JoAnn and Kathy’s family together with many of the cooking school students compiled her book hoping to keep JoAnn’s wonderful and unique spirit alive.  The Fangman family donated all proceeds from the sale of the cookbook to the Fangman Memorial Scholarship.

Jim and Sue Johnson

Mason City native, James T. Johnson and his wife, Sue of Edmonds, WA, established the Jim & Sue Johnson Scholarship through a $250,000 contribution to the NIACC Foundation Scholarship Program.  The endowed scholarship will assist NIACC students studying in the areas of math or science.

After enjoying an extremely fulfilling career in the aviation industry Johnson and his wife Sue, are giving back. They have created several student scholarships over the years. “Through my involvement with different higher learning institutions, you could really see how many students you were helping. Somewhere through the years, I lost track of how difficult it can be to finance a college education.”  That reminder led Jim to reminisce about his own junior college experience and reaching out to the NIACC Foundation. “Remembering my Mason City Junior College (NIACC’s predecessor) experience, made me think about the positive impact my instructors had on me. I want to support that,” said Johnson, who retired in 1999. “My hope is that other NIACC alumni will follow our lead and give to make the financial load a little lighter for students.”

A 1960 Mason City High School graduate, Jim Johnson and his wife Sue are reaching out to college students in ways that offer wisdom and support for their college education. After graduating from high school, Johnson enrolled at Mason City Junior College and graduated in 1962. He then transferred to Iowa State University where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering. Johnson received his MBA as an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow from MIT. “My instructors at Mason City Junior College really ignited my passion for math and science. They were so passionate,” he said. “They really encouraged me to continue with my love for math and science. I want people, especially students to know what an asset they have right in their backyard because there are zero limits to what can be achieved with a NIACC degree.”

John A. Rothamel

John S. Rothamel contributed his leadership skills, integrity, and management to Mason City Junior College and NIACC for 28 years.  He taught in the business department for 18 years and served as director of institutional services and executive dean for 10 years prior to his retirement.  John’s son, John A. Rothamel, established the scholarship to recognize and honor his father’s dedication to Mason City Junior College and NIACC.

The John S. Rothamel Memorial Scholarship is designed for a business major who is a graduate of Charles City, Mason City, Newman or Northwood-Kensett High School.

A North Iowa native, John was born in Wesley and educated in Kensett.  He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, then attended the University of Minnesota prior to returning to North Iowa to teach at Mason City and Charles City High Schools.  John joined the Mason City Junior College (NIACC’s predecessor) faculty in 1958.

According to Noreen Coyan, retired NIACC Human Resource Director, “John gave his heart and soul to the College, as an instructor, division chair, and vice president.  He was a true Renaissance person-he had great intelligence but was very caring and compassionate to both staff and students.”

In addition to influencing the lives of many students though his instruction, Rothamel was involved in planning the layout of the current campus.  John’s son said, “Being involved with setting up the campus was a lot of fun for my father.  Many of the early buildings were temporary and he appreciate seeing the permanent buildings go up.”

Bob Peterson, retired Chair of NIACC’s Industrial Technology Division, said, “John was instrumental in setting up many of the career programs.  He wanted to make sure that students who did not want to pursue a four-year degree could learn a career at NIACC while gaining a well-rounded education.”  Peterson said Rothamel was also involved with the creation of the Independent Study Lab (ISL) which helps students learn through more individual attention.

In addition to guiding young people though teaching, John was active in leading the Mason City High School Junior Achievement Club.  He was also a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the VFW.

John’s care for the young people of North Iowa will continue through the John S. Rothamel Memorial Scholarship.

The Kenneth A. Loeb Memorial Scholarship was established in 1970 by John Loeb in memory of his son who died as a result of a car accident while he was a sophomore at NIACC.  Preference is given to sophomore students who may be unable to continue without financial assistance.

“When he died, I was a teacher at East High School in Waterloo,” John Loeb said.  “The students there took up a donation that amounted to about $500, and I thought the best thing to do with the money was to start a scholarship in Kenny’s name.”

NIACC’s reputation was one of several reasons Mr. Loeb created the scholarship.  He also recognized the importance of all students to go on to college and become educated.  He feels students who start at a community college have an advantage when transferring to a four-year university.

We’re happy to have this scholarship in Kenney’s name,” Loeb said.  “He enjoyed Mason City very much, and NIACC was definitely something positive in his life.

Jon C. Gage

Mason City Junior College, NIACC’s predecessor, was very important to the Gage family.  Edgar Gage and his sons, Jon and Alan, all graduated from MCJC in 1932, 1958, and 1961 respectively.

To help future students have the opportunity for higher education, Edgar and Mildred Gage created the Edgar S. Gage Family scholarship in 1977.

“They thought education was very important,” Jon said of his parents.  “My father, brother and I all graduated from NIACC and that’s one of the reasons we felt a tie to NIACC.”

Born in Iowa City, Edgar attended school in Mason City prior to earning his engineering degree from Mason City Junior College and Iowa State University.  After graduation, Edgar joined his father’s accounting firm in Mason City until 1940, when he started his own firm.  He merged with McGladrey, Hansen, Dunn and Company in 1959.  Edgar left public accounting in 1947 to join the Surgical Associates of North Iowa, where he worked until his retirement in 1983.

Edgar was involved with several civic organizations, including the Mason City School Board, Hospice of North Iowa, the Mason City Chamber of Commerce, the YMCA and the Planning and Zoning Commission.  He was also active in the First Baptist Church.

Mildred, a native of Hannibal, Missouri, moved to Mason City as a child and attended school.  Mildred and Edgar married in 1936.  Mildred was a homemaker and mother to their sons, Jon and Alan.  She was active in the First Baptist Church where she served as a deaconess and Sunday school teacher.  She was also president of Church Women United, Hearthstone Club and Chautauqua Study Club.

Jon is now a retired CPA living in Greendale, Wisconsin and Alan is a retired civil engineer living in Seattle, Washington.  Jon said the opportunity for higher education in Mason City was very important to Edgar because it allowed his family to obtain the initial portion of their education needed to pursue careers in their chosen fields.

Jon said the family enjoys hearing from recipients of the scholarship and knowing how it is helping them pursue higher education.

Joyce Heiman

The Leon and Naureen Heiman Memorial Scholarship was created by the Heimans’ six children in honor of their strong encouragement to pursue higher education.  Five of the six children graduated from Mason City Junior College (NIACC’s predecessor) and all successfully pursued their own interests after completing at least two years of advanced education.

Although Leon and Naureen did not originate from Buffalo Center, they made the community their home.  Leon farmed and operated an implement dealership.  Naureen was a nurse at the Buffalo Center Hospital and the Buffalo Center Nursing Home.  Both Leon and Naureen were active in civic events in Buffalo Center.  Leon served as a volunteer fireman and Naureen was an American Red Cross volunteer.

Because Naureen was a nurse, the Leon and Naureen Heiman Memorial Scholarship is designated for a deserving student in the nursing program.

“My siblings and I really enjoyed the town of Mason City while we attended Mason City Junior College,” said Joyce Heiman, eldest daughter of Leon and Naureen.  “We have fond memories of the College and instructors.  We gained life-long friends from Mason City Junior College.”

The Heiman children, Joyce, Judy, Denny, Debbie, Jim and Tom, plan to keep their parents’ memory and their encouragement of higher education alive through the establishment of this scholarship.

Karren Stephens

Dean William Stephens, Climate Control Instructor at NIACC from 1990 until his death in 1999, made a lasting contribution to the College through his dedication to education and his love for people.

In memory of Dean’s service to the College, the NIACC Foundation established a scholarship to be awarded to a full-time student each year.  The scholarship is designed first for a climate control technology student, then to other career program students, and then to arts and sciences students.

Stephens, a native of Goldfield, Iowa, served as a Marine from 1967 to 1969 and then attended Dunwoody Institute of Technology in Minneapolis, Minnesota, studying heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC).  Dean was employed in this field in Ames for 15 years prior to joining the NIACC faculty.

While at NIACC, Dean was instrumental in the construction of an outdoor classroom on campus.  He loved nature and bird watching.  Dean made nature more accessible to NIACC students though the outdoor brick classroom.

“Dean was very interested in and excited about the outdoor classroom,” said Tammy Hove, Director of Community Relations.  “His enthusiasm motivated other people to become excited.”

Kevin Muhlenbruch, Agricultural Instructor, said, “Dean was a real ‘people person.’  He truly cared about people and was very supportive of both students and colleagues.”

Greg Arrowood, Automotive Instructor, said, “The Dean Stephens Memorial Scholarship is a fitting tribute to a respected NIACC instructor, an appreciated colleague, an admired team player, and a valued friend.”

Both of Dean’s daughters were NIACC students.  Heather graduated with an associate degree in the spring of 1999, and Genevieve was a freshman in the fall of 1999.  Genevieve was the first recipient of the Dean Stephens Memorial Scholarship.

Although Dean will always be fondly remembered by his family, friends, and NIACC co-workers, the Dean Stephens Memorial Scholarship will help him be remembered by NIACC students of the future.

Margaret Hoffman - Gary Hoffman

Dr. Frank Hoffman truly believed in the value of community colleges.  His family supported this belief through the establishment of the Frank Hoffman Memorial Scholarship Fund in honor of his service to the College from 1957 to 1982.

Dr. Hoffman joined Mason City Junior College (NIACC’s predecessor) as an accounting instructor and retired as vice president of NIACC.  His 34-year career included teaching, textbook writing and college administration.

A family statement regarding the reason for the scholarship establishment said, “Education, its pursuit, its delivery and its utility were (Dr. Hoffman’) primary emphases.”

Dr. Hoffman wrote Accounting Fundamentals as a resource in teaching accounting to adults for use in managing their personal and business affairs.  This text is in its fifth edition and is now available both in book and computer disk forms.

“Frank believed that everyone ought to have business training, even if only to run their own lives,” said Margaret Hoffman, Frank’s wife.

In addition to education, Dr. Hoffman’s passion was playing the theatre organ.  He began playing the organ as a youth and kept this interest through his entire life.  Margaret said that after Frank’s retirement in 1982, he played three organ concerts daily for his own enjoyment.

NIACC has benefitted from the Hoffman’s generosity in the past.  The family donated a Rodger theatre organ for the North Iowa Community Auditorium and established a fund for the sponsorship of annual organ concerts.  Additional funds were used to purchase and plant a sugar maple tree as the centerpiece of NIACC’s outdoor classroom.

The Hoffmans passed on their love of education to their four children, all of whom have earned graduate degrees in their field.

Mary Keithahn

As a teacher for 43 years, Rollo Keithahn spent his career helping students succeed.  After Rollo’s dealth in 1984, his wife, Lena, chose to honor his commitment to NIACC and his students by creating The Rollo C. Keithahn Memorial Scholarship through the NIACC Foundation.  Several Rollo C. Keithahn Memorial Scholarships are awarded each year from the initial endowment, continued gifts from Lena and an additional gift in 1997 from Rollo’s sister, Luella Keithahn.

Rollo was born and educated in Minnesota and spent much of his adult life as an Iowa teacher.  Rollo taught at Britt Junior College from 1928 to 1943 and at Mason City Junior College (NIACC’s predecessor) and NIACC from 1943 until his retirement in 1971.  While at Mason City Junior College and NIACC, Rollo taught history and economics.  Rollo expected a lot from his students and encouraged them to continue their education with careful planning.

Rollo’s teaching ability was respected by his co-workers and his students.  Roger Watson, retired NIACC instructor, said, “I had always heard of economics as the dismal science, but Mr. Keithahn made it so interesting that I considered making economics my major.  Although his teaching style was formal, he could not hide the twinkle in his eyes.”

Another former student, venture capitalist John Pappajohn, said Mr. Keithahn was a terrific instructor.  During his 24 years of teaching, Rollo has a positive impact on many students.

In addition to an outstanding career educating North Iowa students, Rollo enjoyed many community activities and hobbies.  He was an avid reader, gardener and world traveler.  He also enjoyed classical music and opera.

Although Rollo died in 1984, his legacy of caring for his students continues through the Rollo C. Keithahn Memorial Scholarship.

Muriel Giesman Langerud

The Henry R. Giesman Memorial Scholarship was established in 1998 in memory of Henry “Hank” Giesman, a NIACC instructor for 29 years.  Giesman taught biology, anatomy, and physiology in NIACC’s science department.

“Both NIACC and the science department were very special to Hank,” said Muriel Giesman, Hanks wife.  “NIACC and other two-year colleges are some of the best things Iowa has to offer because a two-year program fits many students’ needs.”

Ron Jenkins, a fellow NIACC biology instructor and Giesman’s office mate for 28 years, said, “Both Hank and I thought NIACC was the best place to teach.”

Giesman was born in Nebraska and attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, where he played football and studied biology and physical education.  After serving in the United States Army, Giesman taught physical education and biology, as well as, coached football at Nora Springs-Rock Falls High School.  He received a master’s degree in biology from Humboldt State College in California and joined the NIACC faculty in 1967.  Giesman taught at NIACC from 1967 to 199 and was an assistant football coach from 1967 to 1976.

Jenkins said that Hank, as a former coach, could really relate to his students.

NSB Bank

Kary S. Paulson, chairman of the Board of NSB Bank in Northwood and Mason City, has a strong commitment to NIACC, a school which he believes is a magnificent resource for North Iowa.  Paulson and NSB Bank have shown their level of commitment through the through the establishment of an endowed scholarship.

“NIACC gives all students a chance,” Paulson said.  “Many students from Northwood have received a college education because of NIACC.”

Paulson himself is a 1967 graduate of Mason City Junior College (NIACC’s predecessor) and a 1969 graduate of Mankato State University.  He served on the NIACC Alumni Advisory Board, the NIACC Foundation Board of Directors and the Keeping NIACC First Campaign Executive Committee.

The NSB Bank Scholarship is an annual award for a graduate of Northwood-Kensett, Mason City or Newman Catholic High School who is enrolled in the business or information technology programs at NIACC.

Paulson said he selected those fields of study for the scholarship because graduates could immediately be employable by NSB Bank or other area banks.  He hopes to assist NIACC students that may be interested in entering a banking career upon graduation.

NSB Bank was organized in 1933 during the Depression by local investors, and Paulson’s father and grandfather purchased the bank in 1954.  Kary joined the bank, representing the fourth generation of the Paulson family affiliated with NSB Bank.

Since 1991, the bank has experienced significant growth with the purchase of deposits from two other banks and two new branch locations.  Today NSB Bank has branches in Northwood and Mason City.

My hope is that other young women will have the same opportunity through this scholarship,  to play sports in college and become a leader in their profession.” McGuire also credited the mentoring she received when she first started working for NIACC in 1993.  “There were so many people who were willing to mentor me as a young professional.  I still think of them, almost daily, and wonder how they might go about solving an issue.  I can’t express my gratitude enough to those individuals. I wanted to provide this scholarship for young women who are just starting their educational career.  I want these young women to know someone is looking out for their best interests and life potential.  NIACC changed my life and I want to do the same for others.

Shirley Sandage - Scott Sandage

Mason City native Shirley Sandage knew that each of us has the ability to make a positive impact on the lives of others, whether it is small or large, local or on a national scale.  After a lifetime of advocacy for needy populations in the U.S., Sandage left a final legacy to be shared with NIACC students.  In 2010, she established the Garrity/Sandage Door Opener Scholarship through the NIACC Foundation. As a result of her commitment to NIACC through the Foundation’s Planned Giving program, she then included a $30,000 bequest from her estate to enhance her already-established scholarship fund. Sandage passed away in 2012 in Frederick, MD at the age of 85.

Support through the Garrity/Sandage Door Opener Scholarship is designated for divorced, widowed or unmarried women over 40 who want to begin or complete their college educations. Her gift speaks to the passion Sandage felt for helping women in need.

“She wanted to help women who have raised families, cared for aging parents or simply worked all their lives to support themselves only to find they were middle-aged and had no opportunities for self-improvement or advancement,” said her son, Scott Sandage, in a recent article for the Mason City Globe Gazette.

“Shirley Sandage was a true activist who, through broad strokes, affected the lives of countless members of our community as well as others throughout the nation,” said Molly Knoll, Assistant Director of the NIACC Foundation. “Her gift to the students of NIACC will be appreciated for years to come.”

In 1976, Sandage and friend Margaret Garrity, co-founded The Door Opener in Mason City as a drop-in counseling center for women. The center achieved national recognition as a model for assisting women to become economically independent and free of welfare assistance. It preceded today’s Crisis Intervention Services in Mason City.

Prior to that, Sandage was the founder and first Executive Director of the Migrant Action Program (MAP), a multi-state agency headquartered in Mason City that provided educational and medical services to migrant farm worker families. It was through the MAP program that Sandage met Garrity, who would become her mentor. Garrity was an early activist in the civil rights movement who had also worked under the Eisenhower and Johnson presidential administrations.

During her four-decade career, Sandage held a number of positions focusing on the needs of others, including that as Specialist for the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C., as a rural expert on issues related to welfare reform in the work incentive program. She was later a founding member of the National Displaced Homemakers Network Inc.  In 1980, Ms. Sandage was appointed Executive Director of the White House Mini-Conference on Older Women, resulting in the establishment of the Older Women’s League as a national membership organization dedicated solely to advocacy for the concerns of mid-life and older women.

“Her concern for others will serve as an inspiration to us all,” said NIACC Foundation Director Jamie Zanios. “In addition, her gift of scholarship funds will affect many. We are especially grateful for her commitment to the education of women in North Iowa through planned giving,” he said.

As a teacher and coach, Bill Steneker supported countless young people throughout his life.  Although Bill passed away in 1998, the Steneker family continues to support North Iowa students though the Steneker Family Fund.

Steneker faced a challenging childhood and youth but receive help from many people.  His father, a dentist, died while Bill was an infant, but his father’s friends who were also dentist cared for his teeth without charge as he grew up.  He attended Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa, during the Depression and worked to pay his way through while living in a small dorm area above the gymnasium.  Bill knew personally the difficulty of financing a college education, and he started the Steneker Family Fund in 1984 to help others meet this challenge.

Virginia Steneker, Bill’s wife, also knew the challenges of paying for an education.  She taught school in rural Iowa for several years while saving to attend Parsons College; however, she lost her savings in a bank closing during the Depression.

Bill, Virginia and their daughter, Suzanne, moved to Mason City in 1951 when Bill joined the staff of Mason City High School.  He coached the Mohawk basketball team from 1951 to 1960.  Bill enhanced and expanded the physical education program during his tenure at Mason City High School, adding programs, such as archery, swimming, bowling, roller skating, and square dancing to the PE curriculum.  He liked to keep kids busy and active.

In addition to coaching and teaching, Bill had numerous hobbies.  He particularly enjoyed pheasant hunting with Suzanne in North Iowa.  In 1999, Suzanne Steneker McRoberts, now a St. Louis resident, donated a framed print by artist David A. Maass titled The Old Fencerow – Pheasants to NIACC in her parents’ honor and in memory of the many hours she spent pheasant hunting with her father.

Virginia has been an active volunteer for the schools.  For nine years, she tutored first through third-graders in reading at Garfield School.  Virginia was involved in the Jefferson Elementary School PTA and is a member of PEO Chapter IY and the Sorosis Guide Study Club.

Virginia said, “Bill was passionate about students and education.  I want children to get a good education and appreciate what they have.”  The Stenekers have made a better education possible for NIACC students through the establishment of their scholarship.

Tom & Linda Schaefer

To assist young North Iowans interested in the construction field, Tom and Linda Schaefer created the Schaefer Building Trades Scholarship for students in NIACC’s Building Trades Programs.

Tom Schaefer, president of Henkel Construction, said, “Henkel is growing, and one of our biggest challenges is finding qualified people.  We hope that these scholarships will encourage more North Iowans to join the construction industry and improve their skills.”

Henkel Construction, a Mason City general contractor, is a member of the Contractor Advisory Association, a group of 10 local contractors who revived NIACC’s Building Trades Program in 1996 due to significant demand for skilled construction workers.

“There are many good employment opportunities here in Iowa,” Schaefer said, “but those jobs will only go to people with the right training.”

Individuals interested in construction can receive training though NIACC’s Building Trades Program.  This diploma program is a year-long course of study with both classroom and on-the-job training.  It prepares students for employment in residential, commercial, or industrial construction.  The program has a very successful placement rate, and most graduates choose to live and work in North Iowa.

North Iowa is important to the Schaefers, as both spent much of their lives in the area.  Tom is from Mason City, and Linda grew up in Rudd.  Tom’s father worked for Henkel, and Tom joined the company after graduating from the University of Iowa.  Linda, a 1970 graduate of NIACC, received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa and a master’s degree from Drake University.  She taught at the Mason City Alternative School for 24 years.

The Schaefer’s are interested in training construction workers to fill Henkel’s employment needs; however, they also recognize the importance of affordable education and training for everyone.  “With an excellent facility like NIACC in North Iowa, we need to establish scholarships to assist NIACC students in achieving their goals.  Their education impacts both their own futures and the future of North Iowa.  It is exciting for me to see students have success,” said Linda.
